3 mirrors, PDC, a rear backup camera, and she still manages to back into a big ass truck.
There goes the clean carfax.....

Bummer. The X5's liftgate is made of aluminum, I believe. That's a spendier repair, assuming they don't just replace it. Looks like the bumper cover is repairable and hopefully no sensors or inner structure were broken.

And this is why I don't believe backup sensors, cameras and all that crap are worth a damn. Sorry to see such damage after you put all that effort into cleaning it up. Poor BMW? It is a Bimmer right? :(

Yeah the hitch just barely grazed the top of the bumper so it can probably be filled, and sanded. I just hope the insurance company doesn't use a non oem liftgate. Those never fit the same.

Yup X5... I wish I had just taken it thru an automatic wash now, or used that time to clean MY car.

How old is the truck? If it's less than 2-3 years, they'll probably go OEM. You can also make a stink but since it was your wife's fault ...

If you don't mind my asking, oppinion on back up cameras and such? I mean I'd hate to be in the situation your in, but I do kinda feel sorry for her too; she must feel so bad about it right?

I feel for you. I had a gf destroy a 83 turbo Saab. When Iwas much younger and dumber. This is proof that all the nanny devices can't keep people from running into things.

Especially if you don't use any of them! This is why we can't have nice things....

You're definitely in for a new liftgate, sorry man. You should be able to specify that they only use OE parts. You should also specify a BMW certified body shop, they will be familiar with the car and approved repairs on aluminum, as well as BMW paints and colors. The cars I see that don't get repaired at Mercedes approved body shops (they don't have to be dealer affiliated) are very easy to spot and tend to have more issues over the course of their life. Usually with the approved shops I can't tell where repairs were made unless there are part number stickers on the parts or if I take a bunch of panels and things off. Some other shops though, make me wish we had mandatory safety inspections for vehicle registration.

Well I'm sure they help to a degree, but this proves you can't rely on them alone. You should ALWAYS look behind you, and check your mirrors. She was was looking at a hotels bell hop/parking attendant for instructions, and not her mirrors. Because she was on a slope, and the truck was tall the bumper of the truck was too high for the pdc to see and give audible warning.. Had it been a regular car behind her it probably would of went off and prevented the impact. She did feel bad about it.

Man, that sucks. Sorry. But, it does validate my decision to go with a stick shift in my Jeep (i.e., bc wife doesn't know how to drive a manual).

Don't feel bad.....a few months ago, my wife called me and told me she backed into a building and knocked it over. I asked her if she was hurt and if she needed a ride home from the accident site.
Turns out, she backed into the corner of an old cinder block garage on the property where she works and it did partially collapse. I had visions of a completely wadded up Outback, all she has is a 2 inch long crease about 1/4 of an inch deep on her rear bumper.
Back in the early 90's someone skidded on ice and sideswiped the entire side of her 90 Legacy wagon. She wasn't hurt, but she totaled two brand new rental cars (none of these 3 accidents were remotely her fault) while we were waiting for the body shop to repair her car.
Or, the time she backed out of the garage without opening the garage door twice (yes, 2 separate brand new garage doors)......both of those times were her fault. She was more pissed at me because when she did it the second time, I couldn't stop laughing even though it cost over grand each time to get it repaired.
She also backed into the side of her fathers 2 week old Chrysler New Yorker back in 2001.....she hit it right in the crease between the front and rear door.......pushed it in a good 6 inches and buckled the roof which totaled the car.
That one was her fault too, but I never bring that one up.
Hell, the more I think about it, almost every car she's owned has died an unnatural death.
